I have a 4 stroke that I have used for three seasons. It was new when I got it. I "motor" about 50 hours a year, although I realize that age may be a bigger factor than motor hours. It appears to be pumping water as strong as ever. any recommendations on replacing it? I have domn alot of things mechanical, including pulling and replacing the cylinder head on a 2 stroke, replacing a prop and other things, but never did a water pump...especialy on a 4 stroke. Any suggestions?

Changing the impeller is usually pretty easy... if the bolts aren't corroded.
(Not knowing what sort of engine you have).

If your pisser stream is still good, why do you want to change it?
IMHO: Three years, 150 hours isn't that much time unless you're operating in silty water or have run it (the pump) dry.

Are you in salt water? If so, do you flush the engine after each use? Biggest engine killer I've seen in 4 strokes is salt buildup in cooling water passages near the exhaust port.

I was wondering about the water pump because the pros are telling me to replace it every two years. I had my old 2 stroke for about 9 seasons and replaced the water pump once, when it over heated. About the time I was wondering if I needed to replace it again, I bought the new Evinrude 4 stroke. Right now, he water pressure through the "pisser" is very strong.

I tried to replace the one on my 2 stroke way back when. It started to over heat after a few trips. I took it to the pros and they said I didn't use enough compound and the water wasn't making it to the cylinder...so that is why I hesitate to play with this myself. Getting that motor off once it is in the water is a killer.

I sail in the upper Chesapeake so the water is not nearly as Salty as the ocean or lower bay. The motor is completely out of the water when it isn't running. So I am curious as to how many seasons people are getting out of their 4 Stroke Evinrudes.

actually I have complete 3 seasons and this will be the fourth for that pump. And I guess it is about 200-250 hours on the motor it

I replaced the impeller in my Honda outboard last year and the impeller looked good after 6 years. However the bearing under the impeller was showing signs of wear. Jim Baumgart has the same engine and he replaced his impeller because his engine was not cooling as good as he thought it should. His impeller was about gone. Lacking symptoms, I would not tear into it unless you want the piece of mind that comes with replacing it. It is not that big a job. I would buy the service manual though if you plan on doing repairs of this nature yourself.

Most of us don't use our motors very much, and an impeller should last 4-5 years, but I would'nt let it go any longer than that. I had one come apart, and pieces of it got caught inside the engine, and the shop tried every way to flush them out, but finally had to take the power head apart to get the pieces out.

After losing my impeller last year with very little wind to get me back to the slip I now have a relacement kit in the boat.I was able to tilt my Honda high enough to go over the dock,replacement was fairly easy.I am confident I could do the job with the stern beached or with the moter over my dingy if I had to.I would keep a kit and a manual on board and not replace it till you have to.

I have an 86 honda 7.5 and just replaced the impeller this year. I was told by one dealer my outboard was to old and they couldn't get parts. But a dealer at the Cleveland boat show said he had no problems getting parts and said after 20 year I really should replace the impeller. It should be good for another 20 years.

Mike,
Any Honda Outboard retailer or service agent can order one for you. You will need to supply the model number and serial number. That way they include all of the supplements that have been printed since the manuals first printing.

Derek, I like the way you think and if it's broke buy a new one

The previous motor lasted 13 years until the 10% alcohol/gasoline/MTBE mixture did a number on the carburetor. Wouldn't even consider a rebuild.
