I am thinking about mounting a VHF radio at the opening of the quarterberth.

Has anyone else mounted yours there? Is the hull thick enough to use wood screws to mount it?

That's a pretty loaded question. Where exactly? How big are the screws?

I'd say right off the bat, especially if your going into the hull.

Here is what I did

Duane,

Sorry, should have been more descriptive.

On your first (top) picture, in the very far right it looks like there is a metal object there (maybe a light?), I was thinking about mounting the radio there.

The screws are about 3/4".

Thanks,

Duane,

What do you do about access to the mic when you are in the cockpit? Do you have a WHAM?

Thanks,

WHAM? what is that? Wireless headset and mic? I don't have one of those. I get up and grab it. If its an emergency I'd probably use my handheld, the one in the cabin is is more for monitoring. I think since I've had her, excluding test transmissions I've used that radio 3 times, and once was to find a fishing spot, once was to gripe at the race committee and once was to hail my buddy. We leave it on while were at the dock to listen to the weather and also listen to the chatter if were hanging around the dock.

I am also in the process of trying to wire the stereo speakers to the unit so any transmission will come in a bit clearer in the cockpit and override the radio. I think I've found the right unit, now I have to determine if it is worth it.

That area should be okay - There is an access panel a bit farther along aft. you should be able to pop that open and take a peak regarding what your dealing with. It might even be accessible and you can use bolts and washers. I just can't envision it without being there right now.

Duane,

Yes, the WHAM is a wireless device.

I'll check out the access panel you are talking about.

Thanks once again,

Although my radio was installed by a PO, I kind of like the location he chose. It is about a foot forward of the galley light and the power to the radio is pigtailed right from the fixture. In this location, the radio can be heard clearly from the cockpit or on the foredeck.

You can see the radio in the upper right of this photo.

Oops, I meant my other right!

About my 4,000th post...I hope my wife doesn't find out, lest my "I'm too busy" excuse might not work anymore as they pertain to the "honey do" list!

Steve, why do you want a fixed radio? My hand held is great for my needs.

My VHF was mounted there by the PO, and I put my CD player right next to the radio. The deck is more than an inch thick there, and I used half inch screws.

Even though the radio is right next to the hatch, I can hardly hear it in the cockpit. I'd recommend some kind of external speaker and mike or else a high quality hand-held radio, so that you can send and receive from the cockpit.

Because if he sails in nearby Puget Sound, he needs the longer range a masthead antenna and a 25 watt radio will give him. Cheney Lake is only about ten miles from one end to the other, and a 5 watt handheld probably works fine there.

I am seriously thinking about installing the Standard Horizon PS1000 black box radio. I am thinking about putting it in the head area and running the VHF cable through a cable clam and right up the mast. This way, the only connectors are at the ends of the cable. Cable run will only be slightly longer than the mast length. I can put the mic in the coaming box in the cockpit. I think that the mic can be connected to the radio as well but I'm not sure about that.I've been looking for it through one of our affiliates but no luck yet.
Any comments with regards to this radio and my thoughts?

Duane, Is the bulkhead pictured in your post an original Catalina or is that something you installed? I like it!

We had a Standard Horizon radio and RAM mic on tako kichi. Radio was starboard, just aft of the main bulkhead. RAM in the starboard coming box. I really liked having a full-power radio in the cockpit, even with the washboards in for snotty weather.

The black box has limited DSC capabilities, I think. I would want full DSC with GPS wired to it. I'd go with Standard normal DCS/RAM capable radio, mounted port side, just forward of the main bulkhead. Similar cable run, better GPS integration, inside and outside stations.

Brook,

That is exactly why I wanted the mastmounted antenna and the fixed VHF. I will be moving the boat this summer cloer to the San Juan Islands! Can't wait!

Thanks,
