I am excited to attempt a thru the hull depth sounder installation outlined by Nokomis. Any recommendations on make/model numbers? We sail in very shallow waters (less than 30 feet) at all times so great depth features are not that important to us. My research always leads me to fish finders...is this a good alternative??
I installed a Standard Horizon digital depthsounder from West Marine ( DS45 ~$240) in my Catalina 25 several years ago and it has worked flawlessly. It took about an hour to install the thru- hull transducer. The sounder has an anchor alarm and a shallow alarm- sounds ideal for your situation.
Just a heads-up. Per Defender Industries, they haven't received any Standard Horizon products for the last six months. SR Marine makes a quality and competitively priced product - although he had a backorder issue for a part for the depth sounder about three weeks ago.
I really like the EAGLE unit, Fish finder, depth finder, low and High alarms, you can read the type of bottom and temperature, and the price is right, The ultimate would be the Garmin 182, sounder/gps, but here were talking 5-6 boatunits. Good luck Terry #789 LEMATIKE
I installed a Standard Horizon sounder and speed log on my new C25T in 1989. They both worked great until the boat was struck by lightning in 200 and fried. Since they no longer made that model Standard replaced both instruments at manufacturer cost. That's customer service. I also replaced my radio (also fried) with a Standard Horizon model after Panasonic gave me a hassel about an insurance estimate ($50 minimum charge to even look at the radio). I'm sold on Standard and plan on purcahsing the 150 chart plotter soon.
The bottom-end Hummingbird fish finder is about $100. The unit works fine with the transponder epoxyed to the hull under the Vee-berth. When I installed it, I made a ring of rope caulk where I wanted the unit, cleaned the transponder with acetone, mixed a batch of epoxy and poured it into the caulk ring, slipped the transponder in, put a weight on top and waited. When cured, I removed the caulk.
I'm glad you mentioned that Eric. The first thing that came to my mind is do not drill a hole in your hull for a sounder. They can be epoxied to the inside. You will want to look up the details from the manufacturer.
