I still own the original motor that came with my boat and I'm considering selling it. I was holding onto it, in case my mid 90's Honda didn't work out. The latter, is the one I was having the intermittent problem with it shutting off.
The older Honda unfortunately does not have electric start, although it starts with one or two pulls every time.
I have no idea what the value of this motor might be?
Could any of you give me your opinion of a fair price to begin asking for this motor?
I changed the water pump impeller & lower tube seal, lower unit lube, gear case oil, plugs, etc. It is of course the 20" long shaft.
New Honda's are approaching $3,000. I would think a ten year old one in good working condition would be worth around a $1,000. Of course, as with any used equipment, it is only worth what one will give you for it. If your not in a hurry, post it on the local marina bulletin board and start high.

I'd say that's about right. (I got $1100 for a '96 Honda 8 about three years ago--more than I expected.) For yours, I'd start at $650 and see what happens.
Start at $850. Since your Honda is a 4-stroke, it is automatically worth more here in Ecotopia (California), even if it is 20 years old, especially now that sale of new 2-strokes has been banned statewide. It is looking more and more like local ordinances will eventually ban even existing 2-stroke powered boats from most freshwater lakes (Tahoe and Berryessa already ban 2-strokes). The new owner of my old boat (C25 #1205) told me last Saturday that they were shopping for a new electric start motor to replace the old Honda 10 (non-electric start) that I sold them with the boat. The local Honda dealer quoted $3400 for a Honda 9.9 with 25" shaft and electric start. That's only $200 less than they paid me for the boat last year! Hard to believe that small outboards have risen to such astronomical prices. Come to think of it, I was looking at motors at Buck's Outboards here in Sacramento when I was shopping for my Yamaha last year, and I noticed the price tag on a Yamaha 250hp was almost $18,000 - just for the motor!! Are they crazy? You could buy a base model small car, like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for less than that! I didn't believe it when I heard that the average bass fishing boat you see at Folsom Lake can cost well over $50K. Those dinky little 18' fishing boats cost 50 grand? I'm in the wrong business - I should be selling fish boats!
Being that this is my first time to post to the forum after 7 years of lurking, I must take this opportunity to say that this has been a most valuable resource to me for everything related to my C25 ownership. Every repair, project or upgrade I've attempted...antennae mounting, mast gates, deck wiring connector, skylight replacement, swing keel maintenance, etc. has always been proceeded by a search of this forum for tips from those who have "been there, done that". The extensive archives and great attitudes of the members here have always been a true value to me. The strong endorsement of Catalina Direct led me to get their C25 Manual which has been great. So,...thanks! My PO started me off right by urging me to join the Association, but I let it lapse after a couple of years. Shame on me. I'm sending my renewal check in today.
Mark, I am in the hunt for a replacement outboard and may have interest in your Honda if we can arrive at an agreeable price. I am in N. Texas. If the payment arrangements were to your satisfaction, would you consider shipping it?

Why do you say that? Although I'm not an outboard mechanic, I know outboards used seasonally in northern MN get rebuilt and rebuilt again and again, as long as one can find parts/donors. We still have an old green Johnson 3 horse from the 50's.
