Does anyone here know what size bolts I need to mount an outboard motor bracket to the stern of an 80 Catalina, I bought the 4 spring bracket from Catalina Direct and will be putting a 9.8 Tohatsu on it when it arrives. Thanks Bud
I think I used 3/8"-NC machine bolts, fender, flat, and split washers, and nylock nuts to install my motor mount. A related question is how are you planning to spread out the stress on the transom from those bolts? Particularly the top ones.
I get most of my stainless threaded fasteners from Ace Hardware. Home Depot was a few construction industry SS items not found at Ace.
I've had some problems with galling, brittleness and corrosion with 'hardware store stainless' that I've purchased in the last couple years. I suspect there is cheap stainless coming in from China/Far East.
I switched back to buying all my stainless from the local chandlery... no problems and the stainless at the chandelry is now cheaper than the hardware store. (I think they saw a gold mine there)
I plan on using a 1/4 inch ss plate for a backing. I should have said- what length of bolts to go thru the brackets plus the stern. Thanks for the answers Bud
2" are what were on my '85. 3/8ths width. i added half inch backing both inside and out so i had to get 3". also, mine was origianally mounted with screws, but i switched to bolts to get more levergae when tightening.
