One of the boats I am interested in moving up to is the J-30. I noticed one in one of the racing shots. Does anyone have any sailing experience with a J-30?

J-30 is a great boat! Local boat we race against gives us fits in the light stuff. Hard to find a dry one, though. With sailboat prices tanking, its really not worth fixing one if it has wet decks. They were on my short list as I went looking recently. The best boats are the late ones - they have a a revised and much more comfortable cockpit and revised galley. You pay for the upgrades, though.

Note the J30 is in our class, as is the J27. Its a fast boat. Decks and gear are very well laid out for racing. I love the big ample side decks.

Hey Jim.. up here the OYRA (Offshore Yacht Racing Assoc) requires all boats to be equipped with jacklines, and radar reflector, and everyone on board must have a PFD (which must be worn), and a whistle and a strobe. Is that not so down there? I was a little surprised to not see any of that.. just wondering.

Is that kind of like the old Germany; Socialist big brother in the north and freedom in the south? I don't think anybody has the right to tell anyone what to wear, etc, as long as the perp understands they can't call the coasties for help. Slightly off topic but this reminds me... a fellow once told me there is no difference between falling off a singlehand boat in the ocean and falling out of an airplane... you are going to die.

Newport - Ensenada requires radar refelector to be on board, plus life jackets on board for every person, plus at least 2 harness life jackets. Note the "on board" not "in use". There are other required safety items. Jacklines are "recommended".

Local races like the Cabrillo series have no such requirements.

I wore my harness lifejacket and was ridiculed by the others (until it got rough, cold, wet, and dark).

That's why we now have pepirb's. I think BoatUS has a rental program for those who might only need one temporarily for a special event.

Frank, haha.. you're killing me! What, San Francisco - socialist?? I don't think so.. just very very **very** liberal :) Yeah, the OYRA says that if they catch you or crew *not* properly equipped etc. then you are DQ... but it is the 'honor' system. The water is too cold though - believe me you don't want to go overboard.

Jim, yeah, that's true up here too. It's just the OYRA races that are so demanding. In fact, it's even more Draconian than I indicated. I think that there must be 1 (if not 2..not sure) people on board that have completed a US Coast Guard Offshore Safety class or some such thing. There's a good reason for it though...
