Last Sunday we were out on Invictus, winds raning 15 to 25. I reffed the main and ran up my 110. Average speed was 4-5 mph according to my gps. We got hit with a couple of gusts and the gps read 7-7.5 then 8.2 mph. Is that possible? I thought max hull speed was around 6.7 mph.
Don't forget GPS is reading speed over the ground not through the water. You may be sailing at 5 or 6 Knts and have a 2 or 3 Knts current ? In addition GPS needs a stable signal you could pick it up and wave it around and read 60.

You can certainly exceed hull speed (about 6.3 kts) when on a broad reach or running such that you can catch the front side of a wave and actually surf on it. Upwind, it's pretty tough to exceed hull speed unless you have enough power to get the bow up over the bow wave, (planing) which is not likely on our boats. But it's easy on a sunfish!

Rick, I see what you meant now re: "copying cat." <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle> Didn't know you'd posted this. So is your 110 a reefing jib?
