i just got two lewmar winches off of a salvage boats. They are pretty dirty. I have taken them apart and I want to clean them and use them to run rigging to cockpit. Any suggestions on how to clean? I was thinking about cleaning everything with warm water ,soap and a toothbrush. Then soak them in some oil to make sure everything is lubed. Let them soak for a while and clean them off. Is this a good idea or does anyone have any other methods. I do not know if there is aCORRECT thing to do.
If the winches have got old grease caked in them, I'd try automotive parts cleaner or mineral spirits and an old toothbrush. If there are plastic parts involved, you might want to clean those with just dish detergent and warm water.

Me and a buddy of mine have discovered the wonderful world of salvage boats. Yesterday, we literally gave a guy $7 (he asked for some money for beer) to go thru two boats on his lot. One was a Katrina boat and the other just sunk here in Lake Norman. I got two Lewmar winches, a whisker pole, a nice boom, anchor hangers, a saturn bulkhead compass, 10 or so cleats and a throw ring hanger for the stern rails. Going back next week to continue, we ran out of daylight. The guy told me about some dude in South Carolina that has 10 or so salvage boats on his lot and would let us go thru them too. Thinking of going down a getting some more stuff and maybe starting some e-bay selling.
