Both my Signet SL172 Depthsounder and Knotmeter went bad. So I covered holes where Signet gages were with West Marine Model#: 103598, Screw-In Deck Plates - 4" White. I was going to take it to the local fiberglass place to fix it and after he told me it would cost about $500.

I went to plan B.

This is the Picture after removing the depthsounder and knotmeter.

and the after Pictures.

Scot - I've got a defective depth meter on the starboard side as well. I was thinking of making or adding a new port hole, but I like your version instead! Nice job!!!

I bought a Garmin GPSMAP 178C Sounder to replace the depth and knots, I am going to mount it on a Ram Mount on the inside of the Bulkhead, It will swing into view when I am sailing (Well at least that is the plan).

That will be the next Project.

I also considered putting vent/deck plates where my old depthfinder was located. Yours came out great ! By the way, I noticed that the mfr Beckson (maybe what you used) that also makes vent/deck plates, has an insert for installing a small storage pocket on the inside of the vent cover. West marine carries it. Not exactly sure what some one would put in such a small storage pocket...maybe a watch. But then one may forget to retrieve it. Anyway, since you have the vents, you may want to check out the storage pocket if it has any benefit for you.

I decided to make my own circle and bolt thru the hole. Then use the bolts to mount a support plate on the inside to support the RAM Swing Arm for the new Fishfinder I also installed. If the photos do not come out below, then they are on my website.

I found it a great place to keep a spare key to my truck so my wife doesn't have to drive 28 miles to bring a spare from home.

I also was thinking it would be a great place to put an extra key for the boat. I hate it when I drive for an hour and then don't have the boat key.

I think I will put a solar vent in one of the holes.

I'm thinking of doing my first article as C25 tech editor on instruments and bulkheads. I would like to invite you to submit some of the Ideas here and in other places to me through email. If you can do a little write up I'll try to edit it into the piece I'm preparing for the next issue. My deadline in June 11, I'd like to have any ideas and pictures by June 1st. I'll be featuring my instrument cluster project which involved the making of a false bulkhead to hold a sigma knot meter/log, dept sounder, and chart plotter. I had a lexan cover made to protect all the instruments.
Well any how I'd like to have several examples to round out the article. Thanks all.....
