I am told by Cruising Concepts that they have a transparent hatch that will fit an 82 Catalina 25. Has anyone tried this and what do you think of it? A little pricey at $500 but I like the looks and light. I am concerned on the fit as I believe Catalina Direct has a model but it only fits later models.

I liked it better two years ago at $400. Mine came stock and I hate the heat that is lets in. They are wonderful for how easy they are to open and close.

Frank...Thanks for the reply. If the hatch you refer to is the one on a posting of yours several weeks ago I think I may go ahead and try it. It really looked good on your boat.

I think they are virtually identical. I used to tarp my cabin top when not at the boat, now I have extended the tarp to the hatch to cut down on solar gain.

I have had a cruising concepts hatch for 5 years and I'm very happy with it. Unlike Frank I sail in a very cold climate even in the summer. When Lake superior barely gets beyond 39 degrees in July, that sunlight is welcome. My 77 swinger is often mistaken for a much newer boat in part because of the dressing up that hatch provides.

be sure you have him send you the teak shims just in case you need them for a proper match with the hinges. I used an expensive hatch gasket from west marine, and then found I could buy the very same material at lowes for about $6.

Hi John, it you have the concepts portlight replacements as well, the old 25s look like very modern boats. Cheers.

John...Lake Carlyle in Illinois is much closer to Franks heat level than Lake Superior but your boat looks so nice that I'm going to try to find some way to block the heat. Based on current global warming that might be difficult but sometimes it is hard to argue performance over looks and style.

You know Dennis, I have struggled with the old ports and just have not had success with the Catalina Direct retro-fit kit. With windows I have repaired still leaking I'm really leaning towards some other type of repair. I'm not sure if I can afford the cruising concepts approach, Dan Happ has developed a treatment that may be very effective at a much lower cost. Perhaps in a later issue of Mainsheet I can report on members dealings with the "window problem"

Frank-
is that just a regular tarp or have you had something custom made. I like the idea. I made a boom tent from a tarp I bought at Northern Tool. it works great but I think I have a starboard side winch and cleat that may be leaking into the quarter berth. I WILL get to this problem eventually but even once fixed I like the idea of covering up the entire cabin area (that damn boom tent gets in the way.

Thanks, Zach

That is a very nice flannel lined heavy vinyl boat cover for about a 15-16 foot powerboat. I bought it for about $30 on ebay and
had a zipper put in for the mast. I have one more seam to have run to shorten the starboard side and it will be great.
