I am not kidding, I have the rudder up on the bench to fix a delamination problem where the pintons (sp) attach. Also near the bottom on the port side there is a gouge where the prop hit the rudder. My intent was to fill that this morning but when I went to the shop, there was a puddle of water that had obviously seeped out of the gouge. Just for no reason, I dipped my finger in the puddle and was shocked to smell beer. No kidding!!! I suctioned up a bit and put it in a clear jar and it is a golden amber.....Beer. When I bought this boat I pulled four large black yard bags of beer cans off it,,,,,but I did not even think that it might be made of beer as well. Cheers.
I think the beer filled rudder was only a standard featue for the 1977 models. Beginning in 1978 they switched to rum which is why it is so hard to find someone willing to give up their early unbalanced rudders. The rudders were actually shipped balanced but as owners helped themselves to the rum the eventual result was an unbalanced rudder. This fact is often overlooked by those people looking to build a balanced rudder.
First you need to jump into your lake, take a big swig and see what it tastes like. If thats not it maybe since there were so many beers consumed on your boat it is likely there were many empties left on the cockpit sole and the backwash and leftover beer in those empties found it's way through the scuppers and through osmossis made it's way into your rudder. Anyway don't fix the delamination. It may come in handy one of these days while you're out sailing and you run out of beer. All you have to do is pull in your rudder, kneed the liquid out of it into a cup and you're set!
