"Even Chance" finally moved from the dock to four hours of sailing on the beautiful Rapahannock River on Memorial Day. The three months of Friday boatwork days were well worth it.
For those of you who have been following the great Cetol/oil/nothing debate that erupts annually: Four years ago I put Armada (very similar to Cetol) on all the teak. That seemed ok for the first couple of years, but then I noticed the finish becoming darker and darker with exposure. This Spring I sanded/scraped it all off. WARNING: once you have put that stuff on your teak, it is VERY hard to remove. It's almost a permanent decision. My loving wife assumed responsibility for oiling all the teak. It is. . . beautiful! There is something about oiled teak that can't be matched by the other coatings (we use lemon oil below decks).
I'm also delighted to report that the "foursquare" cable tie solution for slapping mast wires works like a charm.
Next for the boat: haulout, powerwash, new bottom paint, waxing, and, finally, application of the name on both quarters.
Happy sailing season, all!

Brooke - when I first bought "This Side Up" I used teak oil on the external wood. I don't know if it's just the Texas sun, but after 3 months (and sometimes less) it would mildew and turn black (others in our marina had the same problem). I got very tired of redoing it this often and switched first to Perma-Teak (a pain to redo) and then to Cetol. The concensus in our Club is that Cetol needs the least maintenance, lasts at least 2 years and can be easily touched-up. Derek
