Here's one for you techies... We have the Garmin GPS 192C (love it) And we have the West Marine VHF500
The manuals show the ability to link the GPS to the VHF so that the VHF can respond to position requests and supply the MMSI & Lat-n-Long in the event of making a distress call.
The VHF can make position requests and it has the ability to display the 'position and id' of the responding vessel.
A buddy of mine (don't know what equipment he has) tells me that he can identify the responding boat on his GPS if the other boat has the report position feature enabled (ie, the other boat has a gps linked to the vhf)
I cannot find anything in the VHF manual on how to link the vhf back to the gps so that the gps can see the incoming position report.
The gps has the feature! And the gps tells the vhf the MMSI number, but can it (the vhf) talk to the gps ???
it is! we have the ability (according to the manual) to set the MMSI, request position and report position, just don't see any way to pass a requested position response to the gps for display.
Paul, I have my Garmin 12 handheld hooked to the VHF and it transmits the data via DSC, but not being a chartplotter it don't receive like your trying to do. I will be hooking up my new 276c and retiring the handheld, so I'm interested in the outcome of this. Have you talked with other DSC users via VHF to see if by chance it works?
Don't laugh, but we have only done 1 radio check in the 10 months that we've had the VHF... get embarased by the anon 'Radio Check' chorus every morning. Now that we are meeting up with other boaters, we're more likely to use the system.
Paul, I'm not familiar with a vhf - gps connection but would offer a couple of questions to answer. Does the vhf have dual data lines. We know it has receive (data in) to receive gps data to provide the transmit information, does it also have a data out line. If not...your dead in the water, if so... then it would be a good indication that it can do what you desire.
If so, does the gps need to be set to a particular communications protocol. For example, when I load info to my base gps from the lap top computer or handheld... then it has to be done with a garmin to garmin protocol but the autopilot needs NMEA protocol to understand the gps.
I realize my thoughts may not have a thing to do with newer tech equipment, but thought them worthy of a shot in the dark.
I spoke with West Marine Tech support and they confirm that the data connection on the vhf is Rx (receive) only not bi-directional.
So it cannot be done on our system (the gps is confirmed to be able to do it if the vhf has a Tx Port. but that is in a VHF that costs over $500! might not bother with it for that price!)
