I'm going to be out there tomorrow. I'm bringing my family out for the first time and my parents will finally see my boat in person. The weather forecast is supposed to be great (70s, sunny, 10 knot winds) and it will be cool to see the race in person. It will also be my 24th birthday, so it sounds like it will be a perfect day out on the water. I'll definitely be taking photos.
My family and I had an awesome day out on the bay today. It was the first time I had taken out my parents and brothers and we were able to see the race up close and I mean very up close! The race started at 1pm near Thomas Point light house, headed north to the bay bridge, then turned south to exit the bay. We were running behind getting out to the water, so I was worried we wouldn't make it in time. So, instead of joining the hundreds of boats up in the spectator zone, I decided to head south of it and hope to be nearby when the sailed south. What perfect timing I made. I sailed/motored to the western side of the bay and not long after the race and hundreds of spectators were coming down right near us. I thought I went to far west, but nope, they were coming right by us. There was a lot of chop which made quite a rough ride but I was able to get a better feel for my boat. Making our way through all the traffic was also a little hectic, but we had a great time. Here are a sample of my photos:

This is shows me, my older brother, his friend, and my parents. It doesn't show my three younger brothers out on the deck. Yeah, I had a boat load of people today.
Dave & Deb - I saw your boat out there yesterday, and had a feeling it was one of the folks from the forum. I was on a friend's Pearson Triton, and we were loosely hanging around with some people on another Pearson Triton. The other Triton is in one of your photos. I never saw so many boats of all types crowded together in one place, and when the racers rounded the mark and came back from the bridge, all the spectators started motoring along with them, and they were watching the racers instead of watching where they were going. It got pretty scarey for awhile.
Steve, Sorry I missed you out there. I experienced quite a bit of chop when the power boats started up too. I was holding position with the outboard idling in reverse because the northerly wind kept pushing my bow around. We even got pooped - a wave washed over the stern and rinsed out the cockpit pretty well. That's when I figured it was time to start moving with the crowd. I've got four years to find a bigger boat before the next race. Had a blast though - what a beautiful day!
Fantastic photos Justin Sure would like to race on one of those. Dave, your photoshows are the best. The music was right on and made me wish I were out on the boat off the Pacific right now instead of working on grades (well, not RIGHT now ). I might like to try making a slide show of my own....we need some west coast pictures, too , after all. Not being familiar with Photoshow, is this a program you buy at the store? Maybe I will stop at Staples and see if they carry it here.
Gary, Photoshow was a free download (they claim an $89 value) from Comcast for subscribers only. (You need username and password to get the download.) You can create slide shows and videos for your PC, CD, or upload to a Comcast site (like I did). You might check first with your ISP to see if they have anything similar. You can also do the same thing with "Windows Movie Maker", which is included with Windows XP, using your own still pictures or videos and music.
BTW Justin was the smart one: he went for a leisurly sail in open water, south of the spectator area and just let the racers come right to him. Wish I'd thought of that.
Yeah I was lucky because I really didn't know where they would be sailing south. The bay is so wide and I figured we would just sail to the western side and hope to see them. I lucked into them coming right at us!

Bubba, I was looking at you but didn't know it at the time.... You may very well be in this picture. Lady Kay is center foreground, pointing West, my friend Dave on the foredeck in yellow foulie:
If you were there, you saw the boats hanging a hard left right after they (re)crossed the line......I was at anchor and couldn't move very fast...... (Note five day shadow after a week at sea.....I made the starting gun with 45 minutes to spare coming up form FLorida!!!)
