Hi folks,

I saw the ad in the Mainsheet about the Power Tiller. I took at look at their website and it looks interesting. Anyone know anything about this, or have experience installing and using it? This sure could make docking a dream.

I didn't see on their website anything that talked about how installation would be done. That's the big question mark for me, especially since I'm not the most handy person.

The previous owner of My Prozac created something similar using the tiller extension kit available for Yamaha outboards. It's essentially an extension cable that allows the tiller to be removed from the outboard. He made a simple sleeve out of fiberglass that slides over the boat's tiller and attached the extended tiller to it. So we have throttle, shifter and kill switch on our boat tiller. While under sail we can just slip this sleeve off the tiller and stow it in the portside cockpit cubby. Our starter is on the outboard. The advantages are we have all controls in one hand while facing forward, because it's removable it's out of the way while sailing. The disadvantages are it's another maintenance point (the cable needs to be checked at both ends every other year probably), and if you steer with your outboard while docking you would have to use the handle on the outboard to turn it instead of the ob tiller. This is the only pic I could find that shows it

Darn! I wish I had known about this last summer when I broke the tiller handle off my OB.
I ended up buying and installing a new tiller handle on the OB - when I could simply have duct taped it to my rudder tiller.

If you want something even better for docking, buy a Mercury outboard. It has a multifunction tiller handle that integrates the throttle, shifter, and stop button...Rotate the throttle one way and it shifts/accelerates in forward, rotate it in the opposite direction and it automatically shifts and accelerates in reverse, to stop press your thumb on the stop button on the end of the tiller...Truely one handed operation, which means you never have to take your eyes off of where you are going.

Guaranteed, I'll never own an outboard without this feature.

Real cute demo. But what I'd really like to see is a decent couple of pictures detailing installation. I wonder if the pictures are intentionally fuzzy.

Very funny Frank. What weren't you expecting the moustache & beard or the bald head? That of course is my wonderful co-captain Dave, motoring in the San Juans last September. And pretend that you don't see the duct tape, employed due to an unfortunate accident that I don't quite remember. Truly the system works great. I couldn't tell much from the powertiller demo either about whether you could remove the powertiller when not in use like we do with ours. That is a feature I really like about ours. I enjoy the convenience of the controls at the tiller, but I like the lack of clutter when sailing. If anyone is interested I'll try to get a better picture of it when we get the boat back together from her deck painting.
I agree that the Mercury tiller controls are nice. We learned on a boat with a Merc, and I always liked that. But I do love my Yammy. So much so we bought a 4hp (the Yammette) for Half Dose, our dinghy.
