I was down at the boat today marking my main halyard to make reefing a little easier. After I marked the halyard I cranked the sail all the way up and got to checking things out. I noticed my main halyard was worn quite a bit where it comes out the slot in the mast. The halyard rubs the edge of the slot when the main sail is up and halyard is pulled tight. Mine was worn so bad that I came home and ordered new halyard from Milwaukee Rigging online I got the New England Sta-set 5/16, hard to beat their price of .47 per foot.

I just wanted to give a reminder to check your halyards at the point where they exit the slot in the mast when your sail is up. I never would have noticed this when the sail was down since that part of the halyard is in the mast when the sail is down.

Tom... heads ups, might save someone a lot of grief. We appreciate the insight.

btw... I contacted Catalina a few weeks ago about the beckson hatch problem in the heads... and didn't get a response. I suggested they ask Beckson to tape a warning to the screen. Maybe no response is no admission of responsibility rather than no notice was taken.

Arlyn your probably right, if they admit a problem then they would wind up replacing a lot of cracked ports.

I had the problem of cracked hinges on my head portlight also. Catalina replaced it with no problems or cost.

Jay,
Was it caused by putting the screen in with the spacer? I recall when I tried to install the screen for the first time. I put in and tried to close the port, it was very tight. I tossed the screen back in the draw. One day I read something about a spacer being inserted in the port, I pulled the spacer out and put the screen in, bingo.
