Hello, this is Don Casey wanna be again. I am refinishing all of the interior wood in my boat, including the panels that are hanging above. Any particular varnish anyone would recommend. I am also thinking of hanging beadboarde above, any thoughts on that? Thanks, Mr Hopper, I know you are watching!

Unless you prefer the look of varnished teak, I would just wipe on a quick coat of oil once a season. Some here on the forum have recommended Howard's Restor-A-Finish.

Here is a thread I made back in January when I refinished my interior wood with Howard's Restor-A-Finish. There are pictures to show the difference and it is very simple to use.

Hi:

Jonathan, I am in the process of using Howard's Restor-A-Finish (light oak) thanks to Justin's recommendation in his previous post. It is marvelous! I am also applying the Feed-N-Wax wood preserver which I highly recommend. Unfortunately, I didn't use Restor-A-Finish on the ladder going down below because the finish was too worn away. I applied cetol instead. I am hoping the ladder will look okay with the companionway teak trim on which I applied cetol. If not, I will probably sand the ladder and apply a finish similar to the other woodwork.

By the way, does anyone know what color stain would match the woodwork down below?

Launch date is June 14th although with all the rain we are getting in Maine, I might be able to sail Wingapo off the jack stands and into Casco Bay.

Will

With a 20 year old boat, how much sanding needs to be done? Thanks for the feedback guys, justin, enjoyed your website!

I actually didn't do any sanding on the interior at all. I just simply wiped the finish on and the wood comes out great.

Jonathan:

Do NOT sand! As Justin said, just "wipe on, wipe off."

Even if the varnish is chipping off? Where do you find the " howard's " finish?

Howard's is designed to use over old finish to restore (not refinish) antiques, but if it's chipping, you might want to sand a little. Their dealer locator is at http://www.howardproducts.com/dlrloctr.asp

Thanks everyone, My copy of Don Casey's " this old boat " came in yesterday! It gave me a play by play on varnishing, anyone who is restoring anything should have a copy of this book!

Thanks again!

I too am in the process of this project, and using Howard's. Great stuff. The wipe on wipe off thing is a godsend. The wood looks brand new and the orange oil smell is an added bonus!
