I just purchased a 1982 Catalina 25 and joined the association. This is my first post.

After fixing the lights, rigging, etc. the freshwater system is next. I partially filled the water tank but get nothing from the faucets at either the galley or the head. I am sure the system has been dry for some time. Is there a way to "prime" the pumps, or should I assume they are just bad?

secondly, what do people use to "flush out the freshwater holding tank? We cleaned out the tank, where we could reach in through the top opening, but as I filled the tank, it was clear there was gunk, (mildew, etc.) in the lines themselves.

Any suggestions?

The pumps should be self priming. If they don't pump water, you may have to take them apart and rebuild the pump mechanism. Rebuild kits are available from West Marine and other chandleries.

As far as mildew in the lines, I use a little bleech (quarter cup or so) when I fill the tanks first time in the year. I go sailing and after heeling on both tacks for a couple hours, I pump out the whole system. Then refill. This usually keeps the mildew at bay.

Bill,
When you pump out do you just use one of the sinks or is there another way to get it our?

When I bought my boat I cleaned the fresh water tank with bleach water, replaced the lines (they were black with mildew) and took the sink faucet pumps apart and cleaned the parts with bleach water (they had an interesting pink algae-like gel in them <img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>). Then a bleach water rinse once a year keeps it clean.

I use one capful per gallon of water and fill it over half full, let it slosh around while sailing, then pump half out the head sink and the other half out the galley sink.
