All right, it's the old question: I'd like on light-air occasions to be able to run straight downwind with the asymmetrical poled out, but spinnaker poles are costly. For a quarter of the price you can get a much lighter whisker pole, but is it strong enough to fly the cruising chute, even in light winds?
Absolutely. I've used my Forespar 7-17 telescoping wisker pole with my crusising shute for five years without a problem. Its strong and easily stowed in the cabin.
I have a Forespar telescoping whisker pole and I have never had a problem with it. You also have the advantage of adjustability. I have a stanchion-mounted pole chock and stow the pole between the fitting for the mast raising stay and the chock mounted on stanchion.
