Installed our mount from Catalina Direct, yesterday.
We bought the 3 spring version, which barely lifts our 9.8 Nissan 4st. Larry's story about standing on the engine to release the catch did not sit well with the "admiral", so the "3 spring" was our choice....seems to work well for my oldest son and me, and no more double block and tackle to lift that heavy motor! Thanks to previous poster's suggestions, we picked up a 12x36 starboard at WM and cut a 12x12 piece on my table saw for backing to the outer transom. We cut two 2 1/2 x 12 strips from the remainder for the inner side of the transom and rounded the edges. At the dock, we had to modify one strip and cut a slot in the outer backing plate to match the existing transom opening for the outboard battery wires. The 3/8" mounting holes did not match up with the previous mount, by 1/2 inch, horiz. We chose to drill 2 new holes in the transom and fill with epoxy. We laid(sp) a thick bead of soft sealant 1/2" inside the perimiter of the outer plate and circled the holes heavily, before setting the plate and bracket, with the bolts, into the transom. Glad I brought all the necessary tools. We attached a safety line from the bracket to the pulpit, and also when mounting the 81+ lb motor, but still donated one 9/16 socket to Davy Jones. We had a spare. One knuckle skinned in the process.
We'll back the bolts out, one by one, and refill the holes with epoxy to protect the transom core, this weekend.
We are ready to Sail! Thanks for everything that you members suggested. It made our project so much smoother.
