Last night, I got t-boned while racing. Two of my stancheons got bent, my jib-car track is ruined, and I've got some fiberglass repair to do. My questions:
1. Can stancheons be un-bent? Can I just get a long piece of pipe and bend them on the boat? Take them off and bend them? Take them to a professional? Buy new ones? If so, where?
2. Where can I find a new piece of jib-car track? Catalina dealer? CD?
Thanks,
Bruce Baker Falls Church, VA "Yee Ha" 3573 '83SR/SK
Hello Bruce, If you want to go with used versus new drop me an email at boatgt@yahoo.com I have all the parts you need. Be sure to put something boat related in the title so it doesn't get junked. Thanks Gene
I replaced 2 of my old stanchions with bases and new stanchions from West Marine. Cost about $50 each. The old ones are 18 inches high, the new, 21. On the new the stanchion is just held to the base by a set screw, hopefully could be easier to replace if it ever gets bent again. The new bases almost fit into the old holes (2 of the 4 holes could be used).

I replaced one last season and they fit perfectly. I was able to reuse the hardware to fasten it. I used a bent nail in a drill to dig out the core between the layers of glass, filled the holes with epoxy then redrilled the holes. This, along with the sealant, ensures a waterproof seal and will fill any voids that were there from the crash or from just the normal wiggling of the old stanchion. I wouldn’t try bending the stanchion while it’s attached, you’re sure to do damage to the deck. Best to get new ones. I’m not sure if they have the tracks, call them.
