I removed the plate that the dome light is attached to, drilled a 1/4" hole in the plate. Ran the fan wires through the hole and spliced the fan wires to the light wires. Positive to positive, negative to negative. Replaced the plate, then mounted the fan in about the same place as the suction cup hook that is under the VHF in the picture below.
They are great little fans Tom. Frank, if you install one... absolutely check that the wires are marked +ve. & -ve. Connecting them the wrong way around will blow them apart... literally! (we found out because our cigar lighter plug was wired incorrectly and I tested the fans by plugging them into it!.. BANG!)
Uh, I think I'll get a local marine electrician to do the wiring if I decide on fans. I did manage to install the superbrite festoon LED's without blowing any fuses. My cabin now has a warm amber glow.
You're absolutely correct about the polarity being critical when wiring the fans. It's easy to check with a cheap volt meter. The fans wires are clearly marked with positive and negative. I also wired a variable resistor in series with the fans I installed. Since they don't come with a speed control, it's an easy and cheap way to regulate the speed (and noise).
I'll check the ohms and get back to you. I got them at Radio Shack. You could even use a small, cheap, fixed value resistor if you didn't need to have a variable fan speed. My fans are installed next to the center lights, so, I wired the rheostat in and put them behind the lights. I haven't had to change the fan speed, but, It's pretty easy if I need to.
I checked and I have 58 ohms in series with my fans. Get somewhere near there and you should be close. You can even get a bunch of fixed resistors and put them together to get different values. They're pretty cheap.
