Where to go sail in February and March? Last winter we trailered the C250 to Baja California and sailed the Sea of Cortez, having a grand time but sheesh it was a lot of work and my knuckles are still partially white from the drive down and back.

Where to go? Money is of course a consideration, but if we could afford to, say, trailer to the gulf coast or Florida, what might the other possibilities be?

Does anyone have any experience chartering small (25'ish) boats in foreign countries?

Are there sailing areas/lakes in the south-central and southeastern US that offer reasonably uncrowded and scenic cruising this time of year.

I don't want to sound ignernt but I've really spent very little time in the southern US as I used to spend winters playing in the snow.

Any advice and ideas appreciated!

Since you are located in Oregon, you are not too far from the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Have you trailered there yet? Of course the San Juans are not a Winter destination, but they are probably the best place to take your boat within a 500 mile radius of your location. Since you have a water ballast 250, your boat is light enough to launch from the sling hoist at Cap Sante Marine at Anacortes, which is only $35, and keeps your trailer out of the salt water. Unfortunately, my 25WK is over the weight limit for the sling, so I have always had to ramp launch at Bellingham.
With fuel averaging $3.25/gal in California this summer, everyone in my sailing club that was considering a trailer trip to the San Juans this summer has bailed out and the trip was cancelled .

"might the other possibilities be?"

Depends on how much heat you want...
How about San Diego? Cruise the Channel Islands?

You are welcome to come here, we sail year round in San Diego. Everything from the Pacific coast of Baja to Catalina and the Channel Islands is well within your reach.

Hard to recommend a cross-country drive and I can't say the views even come close to the northwest coast. But the Pamlico Sound has a week's worth of mostly protected sailing. It is about three days from Oriental to Kitty Hawk. Could be wet but at least no hurricanes or mosquitos.

Hi Greg - Try Moorings bareboat charters. If just two of you, they
havve 36' boats in Tahiti, BVI, and Baja (La Paz). Or- get a couple
to go with you, share boat costs, and get a bigger boat. My wife
and I have done all three areas, with just the two of us, and also
with four (two couples) on the boat. Winter is great for all three. The best deal for BVI is in November, after hurricane season and before the holidy high season. Anyway, my wife and I have really
enjoyed these destinations and the sailing - we are going to do BVI
and Tahiti again this winter. try www.moorings.com. With your sailing experience, you will have no trouble qualifying as a
skipper for them.
