Here is the deal, My wife had gotten me a set of Standard gauges for our boat. I got the wind direction and speed, Depth gauge, and Knot Meter/Temp Gauge. I am planning on installing the transducer in the forward V-Birth Compartment, and running the lines back to the cockpit. I need to find a good spot to locate the panels, I have 3 of them and I want to be able to install them with out wires running all over the place.

At first I was thinking of installing them on the mast, I think that this would be a good place for them, and I already have power going to the mast, But I don't want to have to drill another hole into the deck to run all of the transducer wires.

The second place was the traditional Cockpit Bulkhead mounting, I like this as they would be easy to read for everyone, but again I am having the problem of wires running down the bulkhead on the other side, For some reason The exposed wires really bother me. I like everything well hidden.

So I was thinking of installing them under the step up into the cabin, I think I have a photo of this location for the Catalina 25-250 owners. I really like this spot as the wires will all be behind the sink bulkhead, and I can install a switch right there inside. The battery is located right under this spot so running the wires to power would be OK, but then I have the transducer wires running the length of the boat. I can run these under the liner to the back of the boat.

I really like the mast location, and I think that the location under the step would work also, the step mount would require me to be looking down, and I think that its not the best option.

Is there any place that I am overlooking, I also like the idea of installing them into a hatch board, and when not in use just storing them out of the way.

I have mine in a hatch board. The previous owner had set it up. I like it because the instruments are there when I need them. I hated the thought of cutting holes in the fiberglass. I will look for some pictures.

Removable mount that goes on the cabin top behind the slider. No holes need be drilled for the wires that way.
Give a lot of thought to mounting that transducer in the vberth, that section is out of the water more than you might think. It will also get pounded during chop.

Keep considering the vberth for your transducer. The farther foward it is the quicker you'll be warned of shallow water. I've had mine mounted under the vberth for 18 years and have never not had a depth reading. It is located just inside a bulkhead access door to the compartment under the berth.

Al, considerable difference in hulls between the Capri and your boat. The vberth locker does not come back to the bulkheads in a Capri, there is a seperate tab about 20 inches forward of the bulkheads. To mount it in the vberth, it'll be about 15 inches forward of the keel.

Chris, what about putting the transducer in the hull where the inspection port allows you access to the bulkhead bolts on the starboard side? There's no liner there, it would still be a bit forward of the keel and the hull has flattened out a good bit by that point? Would it fit?

I don't know but that is a good spot for it, The depth transducer is a IN Hull design, I am to place it in a plastic bag filled with water and find a good reading spot for it, Then the directions tell me to glue it down with epoxy when a good spot is found. The only transducer to have a hole drilled is the Knot Meter. I think that the inspection port is a good place, I didn't think of there. I was also thinking under the porta potty and installing a inspection port there, I don't know if there would be enough height? I want to install a port there anyway, just so I can have access to that area of the boat. As far as the Depth Sounder goes, we are on an Inland lake and I don't see us running aground, for that matter if it ever comes up I am sure that we will hit before the meter tells us. I am getting really good with the glass now, so I might just build a wood box, and make a female mold, Then pour some gelcoat, then glass it up. I have been watching Unique Whips on Cable and they build some really cool boxes using Wood and Cloth then resin. Might try building the box out of Balsa from the Hobby Store?

Chris,

Are you sure this transducer will work? Most in hulls won't work with a cored hull... I know the first one I bought wouldn't work.
