Ordered 2 Lewmar 14ST winches for the coaming. For those that have them, where exactly did you mount them, and would you move them if you had the opportunity?

Thanks

John,
You can see in the picture where I mounted mine. I searched the forum before I did and it seems to be a good spot. I like them there, no problems. Easy to get to the bolts in the coaming pockets to install. You are going to love having them. It makes single hand sailing a breeze.

If having a tiller, mount as far forward over the coaming box as possible. If having a wheel, mounting in the middle provides acess from both behind and forward of the wheel.

Tom, what are those "boxes" attached to the underside of your catbird seats? I assume for storing, but storing what?

Frank,
Those are Bose 151 outdoor speakers. Also have 2 just like them in the V-Berth.

Thanks for the info. I do have the wheel steering.

What do use under the coaming top--fender washers or a backing plate? The fender washers seem like enough to me, but is that right?

I used SS fender washers. As you can see in my picture, I removed my 16s off the cabin and put them on the coaming and replaced the 16 with 6's. Catalina used fender washers to hold the 16's on the cabin so thats what I used when I installed them on the coaming.

I fully agree with Tom on fender washers being adequate.

My winches are installed similar to Tom's. Mine are installed with a teak angle winch pad. This gives a nice angle to the lines going forward to a block on the stantion. You can see the winches in relation to the wheel steering. I can reach around wheel to trim lines, also easly reached by crew.

Note: when at the dock I tie the lines to the stantion to avoid them running over the coaming. Makes for easier access on/off the boat.

John,
Have you had any thoughts on how your going to run you jib sheets?
I've seen some use two stanchions blocks, some use one stanchion block. I used one stanchion fair lead on the front part of the wing rail and ran the sheet outside the aft rail. It lined up good with the winch. One thing I have noticed is, I now use the winch handles more since the sheets run at angles.

Tom:

I like the idea of an angled mount for the winch, but I am still assessing the problem, when I have the time off from work (VERY busy summer.)

I am also concerned about the windward jib sheet-if allowed to run loose, how do I get it back after a tack without leaving the wheel- Maybe tie the bitter end to an aft stanchion?

John,
Here's a picture of how my jib sheets run.

The fair lead holds the sheet off the cabin top.

I was worried that once I moved the winches back that I would need longer sheets but that's not the case. The old sheets worked out just right. The loose sheet lays on the coaming next to the winch waiting for the next tack.

Thanks again, Tom. Where did you get the stanchion mounted fairleads?

Got those at West Marine, had to order them from their web site because the local store did not carry them in stock. I wanted something as small as I could fine that would do the job. They have one very similar made by the same company that has a small sheave built in it.

Tom,
Looking at your picture, you run the line to the winch outside of the lower hand rail (after leaving the fairlead). How does this work for you? Does it add much friction to the run?

This routing would sure clear up the coaming step when moving forward. Mine currently go from the winch to the block on the bottom of the upper stantion. One has to watch your step when moving forward due to the line.

Wil, I ran the sheet to the outside of the aft stanchion just so the line would be clear of the cockpit area. As you can see in the picture the angle of the aft part of the stanchion guides the sheet perfect on the winch. It does add a little more friction but no problems so far. I have two winch handles, one for the wife on her side and one for me on my side, works out great.
