If the registration numbers or boat name letters are removed from the hull. Will I find the area faded. Actually the area under the letters would not be faded, but my question is will the hull have two different shades and is there anyway to to repair it.
Thanks

I replaced my registration numbers this past Spring and not only was the gelcoat beneath the letters like new, the area was also raised a bit, maybe 1/32". I tried wet sanding and rubbing compound to even out the raised lettering and that worked, but I was unable to even out the coloring which left a slight ghosting from the old numbers. Anyway, since I wasn't comfortable grinding away at the gelcoat, I've learned to live with the slight ghosting.
I removed the letters and numbers and stickers from my '81 C25, most of which I think were original. I had serious ghosting and the only thing I could find that worked was sandpaper. I tried acetone and goof-off etc. I ended up doing a light sand on the entire topsides with 220 grit sandpaper and was very pleased with the results. My hull went from looking old and ordinary to bright and shinny. One piece of sandpaper, at the end of the job looked like it had hardly been used, so I'm confident that a negligible amount of gelcoat was lost.
I had 22 year old numbers on mine. Goof Off, Acetone or a number of other things did no good. I ended up sanding with 120 grit. It got some of it off but you can still see the outline of the old numbers.
I've tried all the same things with the same exact results. I'm convinced the dicoloring is more that just on the surface. Maybe in another 22 years it'll smooth out. I second Frank's advise as I did the same thing.
I have a tan hull, or cream??? Anyhow, we upgraded to larger lettering this year. I hate boats you cant hail because you can't read their name. So we wound up with 10 inch lettering and we love it! The blending process is nearly complete after a couple of months a floating. We can't really see where the old letters were now.. BTW - we did nothing...
