Jumping in here to mention the adjustable topping lift. It is really an improvement over the pigtail and not expensive. It will keep your boom from crashing around the cockpit, as well as help prevent you from accidently "taking off" while working with the halyard. There was a drawing in the forum a few months ago. The bitter end can either be secured along the boom or be led to the cabintop. I tied a figure eight a little way in from the end where it would snub against the fairlead in case I forget to cleat it.
