So, I decided to reinstall all the teak yesterday, only to find that the tube of 3M 101 I bought about 2 weeks ago would not come out of the tube.
I insterted a wire probe and found the 1st inch of the tube to be very very stiff, the center was in good shape though. No matter how much pressure, I applied, I could not get any to come out, although I did see some slight leakage at the plunger end of the tube.
I thought I remember reading that putting it in the fridge helps. I bought some Boat Life Caulk back in January and have kept it in my fridge ever since and it is still good.
I complained to the folks at West Marine, and they admitted it is a common problem. According to their sales staff, the smallest pinhole, loose cap, or whatever can make a tube of 101, or 4200, etc. begin to set up. Anyway, the good news is, they said just bring the tube back with a receipt, and they'll exchange it for a new one.
I used to keep two or three tubes of sealants, caulks, etc. in my tool bag, but I learned the hard way they usually go bad before I get around to using them. I suppose it's still a good idea to have a tube of some multi-purpose stuff on the boat, but now I buy only what I need, and only when I'm ready to use it.
I have had the same probs with already opened stuff, but this is the first "off-the-shelf" failure. Then coupled with the fact that the tube runs over $20, it makes it that much worse. But, that is the downside to not having a large marine store nearby.
The answer is return it to the store if you have the receipt and then put the new tube in the vegetable drawer of the fridge when done. I have had life seal, life caulk and 5200 in my fridge for over a year. When I need it, I pull it out, place in sun for awhile before use and then back in fridge when done.
