shore power is connected, breaker on, and the batteries still dont seem to charge. How to make the batteries charge- what switches to turn on or off, any other things needed for recharging batteries.
In order for your batteries to be charged, there must be a charger installed. You need to take a look at the wires attached to your battery(ies), and trace them back to see if any of the wires lead to a charger. A typical battery charger will look something like this:
I'd guess that most chargers are mounted inside the big lazarette on the port side of the cockpit, underneath the backside of the DC power panel. My charger isn't made to mount to a flat surface, so mine is located in the galley area underneath the sink. Regardless of where yours is (if you have one), you should be able to trace the wires from your battery bank and find it.
It would be helpful if we knew more about your boat. What year is it? What kind of keel does it have? Is it a standard rig, or a tall rig? Where are you located?
Feel free to ask as many questions as you can think of. This is a great group of sailors, and they are more than willing to help ... there are no dumb questions, so ask away.
