The topping lift, sized by the dealer, seems too short - when attached it cannot be adjusted. I will change it at the end of the season when I take the mast down to winter cradle, but wonder if it will be a problem sailing now, as I can not loosen it. I do know that it holds the boom up and controls sail shape and that is about it.
You can sail without the topping lift, the sail will support the boom when raised and the sail shape will be just fine. Just be careful to catch the boom when lowering the sail, the boom will drop too. There was no topping lift on Knotty Cat when I got her, I sailed her a year without. However there was and still is a pigtail to support the boom then the sail is down. The Pigtail is small length of cable with a hook that is attached to the backstay and is used to support the boom when sail is down. If your topping lift installed now is a little short, why not just extend it some now by attaching another length of similar line to it and replace it later when you drop your mast.
Is it possible to splice/add some additional line? Not sure how it is routed, but you should be able to add some additional length to one of the ends of the topping lift? You could probably locate the splice/knot in the two lines away from any blocks or cleats?
A small block on the end of the short topping lift will allow a line to go from the end of your boom, up through the block, back down to the boom and to a cleat, leave a 2' tail. You will have lots of adjustment.
