While sailing yesterday on a broad reach in 20 knot winds, my leeward spreader put a hole in my mainsail. Has anybody else had this problem. Any ideas on how to stop it from occurring other than reinforcing patches on the sail or padding the spreader?

Maybe you'll want to do both Rick. Sewing sacrificial chafe patches on the sail where it's most likely to rub the spreader end is easy to do and will certainly help preserve the sail. Many chandleries (West Marine, Boat US, locals, etc) sell spreader bo

The c250 spreader tips were designed to be bootless...but....

There may be some sharp edges on the end of the aluminum spreader extrusion or on the tip casting. You should carefully examine for any and remove any sharpness and then ...rig wrap the joi

I bought the largest boots available from West Marine. I use rigging tape to secure the boots to the spreaders/shrouds. The boots do a good job of protecting the mainsail from the spreader/endcap joint AND the seizing wire. My guess is the wire got you
