Could someone please educate me on what an "Emergency Tiller" for a C-250 consists of? A picture would be awesome. The engineer at Catalina led me to believe that it is something smaller that I would have thought. Also she said all boats with wheel steering come with one in a bag. I have not found one on our boat as of yet. I will look better the next time we go to the boat (Labor Day w/e). With all the concern I've read of about "Edson Pull/Pull" steering I'm thinking we should have one.

Thank You

PS; We are proud new (May) owners of an '03 250WK (#676) and still pretty new to sailing with lots to learn. But Happy to be here.

Hi Jim,

I can't help you with what Catalina might have shipped as their stock emergency tiller for a C-250 ... but ... welcome to the group!

BTW ... I bought a replacement handle for a post-hole-digger that I use for an emergency tiller. 'Don't know if that would work for a C-250, but it's fine for my C-25.

Since I've had experience with the emergency tiller, due to an issue of the wrong size pin in the rudder arm and it locking up and bending the eye bolts...it came as a part of the equipment when the boat was new.

It appears to me to be the same size as a non-emergency tiller. It attaches at the top of the rudder with a bolt and wing nut, but be careful if you have to use it that you don't drop any of the parts in the water when attaching the tiller.

I don't recall it coming in a bag, as I had to purchase a bag at WM for mine.

You might call the previous owner and ask where they stored the e-tiller, but it is not something that one would miss when looking at it.

Welcome to the group, hope you get plenty of trips to enjoy your new boat and that you never need the Emergency Tiller!

On our 2005 C250 WB, the emergency tiller is just a standby that is originally stored on the shelf port side aft of the head. The rudder has a bolt hole about 1" down from the top of the rudder. The tiller is bare wood with steel side plates where it mounts the top of the rudder. Not sure, but I would guess it may only be original equipment on wheel steering models.

Paul.

I bought #688 last week. I found mine in the locker in the head compartment, no bag. It's about 2 1/2 feet long. Check the storage areas under all of the cushions and bedding. There are not that many hiding spots on the boat, so if you haven't found it yet you should possibly think about getting one. If you have one you'll probably never need it. You know what the opposite logic is, right?

My 2005 WK came with the tiller (no bag). I had to use mine as my take-up eye broke resulting in no steering control. I highly recommend ensuring that you have the tiller AND that you have installed it at least once to insure a proper fit. By the way, once you use it you will be completely sure that you made the correct decision in selected wheel steering! :)

Thanks very much to all thus far. We will have an emerg. tiller soon if we don't already. The only place I can think that it might be is in bottom of the little hanger closet behind the head. The reason I mentioned a picture is that I am a bit of a DIY'er. But I've found out that Catalina only charges $12 for a replacement (Part# 80223).
Will take a good hard look next w/e and can't sail until the following w/e. I am waiting for a 3 week, post eye surgery, recovery period to expire.
What a knowledge base we have found here. I look forward to when we have enough experience to help others. But for a while I will be asking more that answering. I hope thats OK. Lots of mod's to be made.
Once again, Thank You

FYI,the emergency tiller is small enough that it could be...
.. in the aft shelf (port side of qberth)
.. in either the port or stbd cabin locker
.. hiding in the v-berth storage (the 'hold')
.. stored in the bilge (access panel is in the front end of the qberth behind the ladder.

I get the imptession this sailboat is new to you but a 2003
WK. Perhaps the PO/dealer has equipment that is part of the initial inventory and has been lost or misplaced. Did you do an initial inventory or have an appraisal done before purchase?

By the description, the C250 emergency tiller and hardware is the same as that on the C25. The tiller and hardware is available at Catalina Direct. You can get it on line if not at Catalina, although for a tad more money.

A lot of good comments and suggestions. Thanks "Bear" for the question about an initial inventory. We purchased from a dealer so I checked the Brokerage Sheet. It indicated that there was an emerg tiller. Still have to do one more search of the boat. The saga continues.

Thanks again

You might also want to check and see if the "baby stays" are aboard, they are needed when the mast is raised or lowered...
