After owning the boat and trailer for over a year (14months) and having retrieved the boat to the trailer about 20 times over that period, today I had a break-through! A major 'Duh!'
We have always had trouble pulling the boat forward to snub it tight against the bow stops on the trailer. Today after getting the boat on the trailer I did the 'put the breaks on hard' to shove it forwards and take up the gap at the bow. Didn't work!
I'm staring at the winch and notice that there is an odd shape to the end of one of the winch gear spindle ends. Then I notice that the winch handle has a spring in the clip that keeps the winch handle on. Dang! If I push down on the clip it comes off and I can take the winch handle off... Oh! look, it fits on that other spindle.. Oh look! it is a lower gear ratio if the handle is on that other spindle! Oh look how easy it is to snub the boat up to the bow stops with the winch in low gear!!!! Duh!!!!!!!
Where's that 'Trailers for Dummies' Book!
We had two great days sailing down in Key Largo with Jessie and his family, they took Sea Trekker and we took Joint Decision. It really was great sharing time with another boat owner. Jessie took his dog 'Buddy' which had Peggy & I smiling constantly.
Bad weather shortened our weekend by washing out Monday, at least the boat got a good wash down in the 60mph boat wash on the way back home.
Key Lime Sailing Club is a little place in Key Largo that rents cabins on the water and with your cabin comes a 22' Catalina. I reserved a cabin for a week in November.

Another thing to love about this forum. We all recognize that no piece of information is too trivial. If you've never had a trailer or winch of this size, how would you know?
Also, great info on the Key Lime destination. We went to Maui this past Jan but were disapointed in that we could not find a boat to rent other than a plastic 14' catamaran. We'd like our next holiday to be somewhere that has sailboats for rent or charter, for two people.
Tom, Can you tell me what make/model your winch is? After yesterday's debacle with trying to get the boat in and out of the water, my rebuilt shoulder is complaining fairly loudly. We were considering an electric winch, but I think a two speed manual winch would do just fine.
