Some nice folks are trying to convince your friendly association secretary (me) to move to Phoenix, AZ. Being clueless about that area, can someone out there enlighten me:
Is there any place to sail near Phoenix (actually Chandler)? I think of it as all desert. Please tell me I am wrong.
If there are lakes (I am pretty sure there is no oceanfront), can you tell me how near and how large they are, and how possible it is to get a slip, etc etc.
Thanks VERY much in advance.

I'm not an expert on the subject but live in the area. I've been here for a year but haven't splashed yet. Numerous projects and distractions from them have prevented any sailing yet. I hope to soon keep her on Lake Pleasant which is about a 45 minute drive from the Chandler area. There is an active sailing/racing club at the marina. There are numerous other lakes in the area that I am not yet familiar with yet.
Don't hold me to it but I was told Arizona is either #2 or #3 in boats per capita. Florida is supposed to be #1 and Michigan and Arizona fill the other two spots.
It is only a 5-6 hour drive to San Diego. I have friends who put in there an sail to Catalina. Rocky Point on the Sea of Cortez is only 4-5 hours south into Mexico but I'm told the tides there are horrendous and the sailing is much better further south at San Carlos. It should be an additional 4 hour drive to get there.
Remember, all I've written is what I've been told. I have no first hand experience.
Now the other reasons to move here. If you golf you will find more tracks than McDonalds and the prices range from $20 to $300+. These include a cart and are dependent on time of year and the course. Once you get here you find out where the real bargains are. My experience is that even the bargain courses are great and certainly better than many of the "shirt and skill optional" courses back east.
The weather is phenomenal. Imagine waking up to sunshine probably 320+ days per year. Sure it gets warm in the summer but 110 degrees here is like 90 degrees in Florida. Plus very few flying insects and NO hurricanes. This year was an anomaly but on average, Flagstaff gets more snow than Buffalo so skiing is close by. If you think it's all desert you'll be surprised. Arizona has 3 of the 5 climatic regions of the world. There are forests, mountains, and of course, desert. Enjoy it all.
All in all this is a great place to live. Come on down and bring the Nationals with you We should be ready by then
Just northeast of your area is the Tonto (sp) national forest and on there is a huge lake right in the middle that has boat slips. I saw them on Google earth. Cheers.

Google "Arizona marinas"--it's all there.
Lake Pleasant is right outside of town and has sailing and boating.
Lake Mead is close by as is Lake Powell. Trailer boaters heaven.
Many, many Phoenix residents keep boats in slips here in San Diego. We call them "Zonies". 6 hour drive or short flight for a weekend at the beach.
San Diego slip is about $300/month and readily available for 25 foot boats. Welcome to Fleet 7. I'll watch your boat for you, you can move right into the Cavin's old slip (they are from Phoenix and recently moved the boat back to Rocky Point).
Actually, the company that was talking about inviting me to Phoenix renigged (the req got canceled). 30 minutes after I received my e-ticket to come and interview, they called back and said "never mind".
Small, little known company with a few troubles right now.

Intel.

Yup--they're suddenly exhaling people. Good place not to be for a while--perhaps from now on if everyone expects to buy PCs for under $300.
