I took my girlfriend and her parents out for a day sail a couple of weeks ago. Here are some of the results:
Our mooring field: Pier 40 @ Houston Street, NYC. My boat is the one in front on the left. The brick structure on the right is the vent for the Holland Tunnel:
My girlfrind, Sarah, on deck with Lower Manhattan in the background:
Sarah raising the main:
Pulling into the dock:
Me at the Helm with the Staten Island Ferry in the background:
And finally, rowing the dinghy back to the dock after a great day:
Great shots! Nothing like the Hudson and East River around lower Manhattan. Too bad you didn't get one with those big black RIBs with the machine guns...

Very nice pictures! Where would the Twin Towers have been in all that? Isn't it great when you just go a little ways on the water and the city crowds are gone. Hope I can make it up there one day... year.
I admire your courage to sail in NY Harbor! Do you ever have any debris problems? I used to commute on the Port Imperial ferry and the harbor was often litered w/ an array of trash from litter to wooden telephone poles...
NYC Harbor is a GREAT place to sail. There's always something going on. I kept my C400 at Liberty Landing for 2 years and I still make frequent trips up there from the lower harbor / Raritan Bay. I've never sailed the C250WK there but I will one day. I've got a hundred good stories to tell about the place.
I ran into HMS Rose (the frigate used to film Master & Commander) once and we raced up the Hudson for about 6 to 8 miles. Square riggers cannot point - it had no chance.
I pulled out of Liberty one day at the same time that 3 retired 12 meter America's Cup racers left North Cove (a small marina near the still standing World Trade Center). Luckily for me, they were probably crewed by bankers or insurance execs on an outing. The 4 of us raced towards the George Washington Bridge (uptown). Bankers (at least these guys / gals) can't crew and they couldn't catch me, and finally turned. Hey, singlehanded on a 40 footer, I beat 3 12 meter cup racers!!!!
I will always love sailing there. You've got something different every day.
