I have noticed that the admiral (and yes, me) would board our boat a lot better if we had a dock step/s to use. The admiral carries our dog on an off the boat quite a bit and it is a little cumbersome making that longer than normal step off and on.

Now I am like most of you, I understand that marine equipment can be a little pricey. In most cases, I can see the need when you are dealing with items that are around the water. However, in looking at the more popular dock steps, they want around $70.00 for a single step with a non-slip tread on it. That's just nuts

Do any of you know of something that would serve the purpose that sells for a little less that the price of gold? Yes, I could build my own, but was trying to avoid the work and hassle.

In my opinion 75% of the earth is water for a reason. That's why I sail.

You might try Wally Mart, Home Depot, or Lowes for a Rubbermaid step or steps (we have one at home). They make several models for under $20. You could probably screw it down to the dock, but most marinas don't allow those mods.

I use a Rubermaid step, in fact I have two, one for each side of the boat. I leave them at the slip when I'm out and put them in the cockpit while in the slip...put my CF number on them with permanent ink...never have had a problem with them going missing...I think I bought them at Wal-Mart...Dan #727

I think I will check Walmart, or Target. I don't specifically remember them being sold there, but may have missed them. Can't mount them to the dock as it is a cement surface. I am pretty close to both stores.

Mike, you don't say whether you are boarding the boat at the bow or at the stern, but the bow is much higher than the stern, and you have to climb over the lifelines. Usually, if you back the boat into the slip, you can board at the cockpit, which is much easier, especially if you have a gate in your lifelines.

Used a rubbermaid until recently when Admiral told me to chuck her step contraption for her video workouts. It works better as it has rubber grips on the bottom and a tread on the step. That kind of stuff...never buy it if it says 'boat' on it.

I would agree with the direction this thread is taking EXCEPT for an embarassing incident. Since acquiring my boat about three years ago I have been using a Cosco step stool that came with it. A time or two I felt it was a little precarious but nothing too serious.

Last weekend I boarded as usual: left foot on bottom step, right foot on coaming. Then the boat moved slightly from the dock, the step moved the other direction and suddenly my foot went into the open space above the first step, the stool twisted and my foot was trapped. I couldn't get on the boat and couldn't step back on the dock and the stool was hurting my ankle. I was torn between pride and pain. Pain won out and I yelled for help from a friend two slips over. He got me out of trouble but not without a few comments I didn't really need.

Now I am looking for something that will work better for me. Others would probably never have a problem but most others are more agile than I am.

Incidentally, I found a long time ago that the Cosco was not buoyant and I added some spray foam under the top step.
