The last race in our fall "Frost Bite Series" is this Sunday. This year the term frost bite will have special meaning as the forcast for the next two days is for temperatures in the 25 to 38 degree range, winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 50, and snow fall from 6 to 32 inches, depending if you are in the "higher elevations" or not. This is an unusual early October winter storm warning in Upper Michigan which is driven by a Low that the National Weather Service describes as typical of a category 2 hurricane. The after effects on Sunday should be quite interesting don't you think?
I moved my boat off it's mooring to a somewhat secluded bay yesterday, and secured it to a substantial dock. I took everything out of the boat not required to race, and expect to be out of the water and buttoned up for winter within hours of completing the regata. Normally I've accomplihed this two seeks ago but I am currently in second place in the series, 1 point ahead of a 35 foot Beneteau and a 28 foot Tartan Piper. I was third in the series last year and just had to go for it.

Would you like photos of the storm or the race? Having lived in Monterey for 4.5 years, I know you don't get much snow in the San Diego area. I'm figuring you might want to see what it might look like in a fall color setting. I'll try and get pictures during the race but I'm single handing so handling the boat and taking decent pictures might be a problem, depending on the weather. We'll see how it goes.
Dennis, Be prepared it is coming your AND MY WAY.. We had NO wind on Saturday and last sunday..even Monday- (was going to Ditch Out of work ) Now its blowing/raining and there is a freeze warning So.. Today it was 70..probably the last 70 until next May.. We will pull the boat probably on the 28th or 29th..
O.K. O.K. I will stop complaining about the weather in central Arkansas. The racers are just now beginning the keel boat series. The little guys race in the summer when there is less wind. Was out today, 15-25 knots, 65 degrees. I will not compain. . . I will not complain. . .
OK, I woke up to 4 inches in the yard this morning. Went down to check on the boat. Snow in the cockpit up over the seats, 6 inches on the dock. We're forcast for another eight inches tonight with 50 mph winds, and another 8 to 16 inches tommorow with winds unabated. A real mid-winter blizzard. I'll get some pictures sometime before the weekend is over. Boat is still in the water secured against the projected winds. Looks like I'll have to add snow shoveling to my pre-race prep.
Our first ever Frostbite Regatta wasat the end of January about 10 years ago. Temperature was 85 dgrees...Two years ago it was 35 degrees with a 10k north wind!! Ah, the vagaries of Central Texas weather!
