Most sailboats around here don't even sail when the wind is good, I see them all motoring. Can you imagine the power boater who would buy that ever getting the sails up?
On the other hand, with the extreme price of marine fuels these days, it is the way to go.
Nothing new under the sun, they have just designed a motorsailor with a nonsuch cat ketch rig.
It's also like the Freedom cat ketch. They also make a cat sloop. Although the pilot house & 100 hp engine ("...to maneuver in and out of docks..." yikes!) are interesting additions. There's just something about an unstayed rig though. I have to admit I prefer to have something to hold onto when I go forward while heeling, other than crawling along with the handrails.
I have seen the boat in person while visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is a research vessel and because of its sail power it is able to operate much more cheaply than a traditional work boat. That is why is has the large rear deck. Randy Repass, Founder of West Marine, liked it so much he had one built for his family and he is now crusing the south pacific with it. Its a very easy rig to sail as a tack involves simply turning the wheel. Got to tour the Repass's boat at the boat show in Oakland a couple of years back. It was pretty nice and seemed pretty practical. You can check out the boat in the front of the WM catalog.
