I went to the Sobstad loft in Sandusky and talked to him about a loose footed main. He asked if my main had a shelf foot in it. This is the original main and I not sure what he was talking about HELP He said he might be able to recut it. Boy this forum is great.
My main has a shelf foot, it is a special North Sails racing main. The stock Catalina sails were not shelf footed.
But you can tell, easily. Does your sail have a flattening reef? Small reef points about 6 inches up? Does your sail have a big fat beer belly hanging over the boom with the outhaul eased? That's the shelf, the flattening reef is for pulling that shelf out.
