Taking the motor off the boat in about a week (its winter time in AZ). I know I can store it on its side but would prefer to put it on a carrier/stand of some type. Has anyone been successful at making one of these or should I just go out and buy one. I have found them for around $50.00.

I use a saw horse made of 2X4's. If you have an extra long shaft you may need to lengthen the legs. The price of $50 sounds reasonable.

Shelby,
I clamp the motor to a rectangle made out of 2x6s, ~12"x8" which gets bolted to a wall. To support the weight of the motor, I attached one 2x4 leg to the rectangle, (~36" long, depending on your shaft length.) All pieces were lagged together. <$5 if you have some scrap wood laying around.
Hope that's clear enough - maybe I'll snap a picture tonight.

I bought a cheap furniture dolly from the hardware store. The type that can be a cart or an upright unit. I bolted a 2X4 across it at the hight of the outboard clamps. I can wheel the motor about without picking it up and when at rest it sets like a tripod on the cart and the prop skeg.

I've seen outboard stands made from sturdy handtrucks. You just have to bolt a 2x6 up high for the motor clamps and somehow elongate the foot of the truck(bolt on some sort of extension)to keep it upright when the motor is attached. This also makes it easy to move around.

The outboard stand I use is about forty years old and was used by my father. It looks like an over sized handtruck, but it is made out of galvanized pipe, elbow's and tees, a 2x6 bolted on for the motor clamps, and lawnmower wheels attached to a solid rod axle to make it mobile. Somewhere along the line, the pipe joints got spot welded, probably to keep it from loosening up.
