The lake I am on is getting very low. The water depth at the slip is about 5 ft. I think my swing keel is touching the bottom. Should I just let it rest on the bottom or should I winch it up to keep it off the bottom as the water goes down?

I don't have a trailer to take it out of the lake.

Frank's absolutely right. I always keep mine up in the slip, but that's salt water.

Great, that will work. Now I just need to finish installing the new winch for my keel.

Thanks.

David,

What gate/slip are you at? I’m at gate #9 slip #398. I ‘m also setting in 5ft of water in my slip, but I can’t crank up my fix keel . Went and bought some chains and straps to secure the boat to the dock when I hit bottom. If you need any help feel free to call me.

With my little plywood 16' daysailer in England, I would put struts on either side if the boat was going to be high and dry, the struts had plates on the bottom to prevent them sinking too deep into the silt bottom and they had horizontal bars with padding (like trailer bunks on their side) and a line running fore and aft to keep them in place. It was a drop keel boat, so it wouldn't lean over much when on the bottom, but it made the boat stable and upright so that I didn't have to worry about water ingress from rain.

I lift my keel every time I come back in. I am sure I could leave it down for most of the summer but fall water levels would have bumping bottom too often. CHeers.

Frank

Waited to long to pull my boat. It is to shallow (5ft) at the ramp we have to use. I draw four feet and my trailer is 20inch tall at the keel bunk. The City said that they were going to put some water in at the end of October but have changed their mine at this time. So the only water we will get is from rain. Hence I’m stuck unless I hire a crane to come lift me out of the muck.

will the city allow people to moor out in the deep water?

Carl,

I am in slip #489. I am not sure what gate number. It is the last row on the east side.

Thanks for the offer of your help. I just hope we get water soon.

Carl, I would get a long rope and push that trailer out until I could walk the boat on. The yacht club has a hoist doesn't it? How are their ramps?

I got my swing keel winch install and I am off the bottom. It looks like the lake will continue to go down over the next few months unless we get some good rain. It won't take too many weeks at 6" a week for me to be on the bottom again.

Any suggestions on what to do when the swing keel is up and I am on the bottom?

The slips are made of concreate supports on each side anddo not move. So I can tie to the slip supports in some way.

Frank,
OCBC is in worst shape(2-3ft of water) then we are. They just hired a crane yesterday to pull what boats they could reach. The rest they shoring/tying up. And as for as getting my boat on the trailer, I don't think if I could pull my tires off I could get it on. It is just under 5ft in the harbor area?

Dennis

We normally sail thru the winter, so I don’t know what I going to do. I guest when the lake get low enough I will do my bottom.

Frank

Your right I will not let this happen again. I know now at what level to pull my boat!

I never felt comfortable keeping my Swing keel in the up position.

If it lets go....by by boat!

In fact, we have seen more than a few posts here about keels falling. It can sink your boat.

That is a good point PW. I have motored with it up and down and don't see much differnce in speed either way. It would sure make it easier to set sail in stiff winds and high seas. I'll have to try motoring back into the slip is it down. Not sure if there is enought depth. Cheers.
