I recently put on a new winch for my swing keel.

How do I know when the keel is up all the way? I raised it until it seem to not want to come any more.

How many turns is typical?

You can feel and hear it when it is all the way in the keel trunk.
Trust your feelings Luke...

I have painted the cable, with an inch of house paint, so that I know when the keel is up the proper amount. I like the idea I read on the forum a week or two ago about varying the location of the cable on the turning ball to avoid problems with stopping the cable at the same place. I may try that next year.

I am a little concerned. After reading this post, I, for the last three sails, counted the number of turns on my swing keel and it is 23 turns. That is a lot differnt than 32 so I wonder why the difference. Is there something wrong with my rig. Cheers.

Dennis, my swing keel takes 24 turns. I was surprised at the higher counts as well, but mine works fine. I plan to replace all the keel hardware in a few weeks, so maybe with the new winch the number of turns will change.

I hope not Justin. I get tired at 23 turns. Actually, I am going to leave it down next year. Cheers.

Ours came up 2 times this year. Once for the lift and hose off before nationals, and once two weeks ago when we hauled out the boat. I recommend leaving it down all the time for all freshwater boats.

If I had the depth I would have left mine down. Because I had to get a cross a finger support bar to get in my slip I left mine half way up in the marina area. I f I only used it twice a year I think I would look at disconnecting the cable.

It is one of those things that you think of when the boat is in the water. When it's time for a hose off I'm not around until the boat is back in the water and when is spring launch I'm too busy with everything else on the checklist.
