A friend of mine just bought this boat and he is trying to figure out what it is. There are no markings on it, except for the number 349 printed on the inside of the transom. He has never sailed before and wants to learn. Any Ideas?
That looks like a serious little boat that will make your friend hate sailing. It looks like some off brand take off on a Fireball, narrow and unstable except at speed.
Drag that think to a local DIY carwash and in 10 minutes you could get it looking pretty good. Looks like a ball to sail and reminds me of a boat my Aunt sailed for years. She has passed so I can't get any detail. Cheers.
Certainly not a Lightning... Possibly a Flying Junior (miniature Dutchman)... or maybe a Finn (an Olympic class), but the pics don't give me enough of a view of it. Maybe not. What's the rig--main only, jib, spinnaker,... ? From what I see, it might be kind of a hot-rod to try to learn on. Hope your friend is ready to get wet! (It also looks like the transom got crunched.) Any logo on the sail? The almost-plumb bow might be the best clue--that's unusual in little racers like that.
Well guys, we were all wrong! I went to see it again this afternoon and asked him if he had looked at the sail or not....... He had not..... We looked at it and in big letters......... LARK
Looked it up on the web and yup, that what it was. He bought the boat for a $100 and is planning to fix it up and sell it. He owns a boat repair business and bought it for a winter hobby. Looks like the boat is from the late sixties.
thank god it wasnt a flying junior or a lightning. ive sailed both, and if it had turned out to be either of those, i was going to list the c25 on ebay and quit sailing entirely

Indeed it isn't anything like the classic, hard-chined 19' Lightning, but the pictures don't look dramatically different from what I remember of the FJ (although I'm trying to remember from more than a few years ago). I think the Finn is beamier and has more of a deck, and the mast is unstayed... I'd never seen a Lark.

Definitely not a Finn which is a 14ft single handed Olympic centreboard boat with a more rounded bow profile and section. Definitely not a Fireball which has a bow shaped like a chisel, and almost zero freeboard. The 12ft Lark started life as a plywood boat and were some of the earliest boats to use long top battens to give lots more roach and power. More fun than a 420.
