Henk, I noticed you don't appear to have tie down straps on the around the boat to the trailer. Would recommend you get some two inch ratchet straps with hooks and lock the boat down to the trailer. If you ever get near NE Florida lets us know. Open invite. Be careful and have a great adventure.
Thanks Jerry for the advice regarding strapping the boat while travelling...
We have road-sailed now for several hundred miles without the boat shifting at all on the trailer. Are the straps meant to hold the boat down on super rough roads, prevent shifting or sliding with sudden turns/stops??
At what location and do you apply the straps aft and bow?
Thanks for your compliments Mike and all of you...!! We love your and any comments received!! We'll keep you posted!
Right now while for 3 days hunkered down at Coos Bay on the Oregon Coast in another one of the many rain storms we have seen more water on top of the boat than underneath Someday Lady... had I known I would have applied antifouling on top too (just Kidding)
We arrived in California this afternoon after enduring almost the entire trip huge winds and vision at times totally obstructed by heavy downpours alternating with very dense fog...
Will go to a store tomorrow and buy the straps and some padding as per your recommendations... thanks guys!!
You kidding?? We don't want the kids to know where we are...!! (just kidding)
We drove from Coos Bay, Oregon to Trinidad, California today... Full details will come later. We need to decide what road will lead to some sunshine... any suggestions??
I have enjoyed you story so far. Please keep us posted of your travels. I grew up on the central cost of California in Santa Maria and I am sure you will enjoy your trip down south. We live in Las Vegas now and if you make it by here you have an open invite to stay and will take you to Margaritaville for dinner. Would love to go sailing with you on Lake Mead. Be safe and enjoy your trip.
Well, you'll get some sunshine today... but it's fairly cool (42 now). At least you won't be looking through rain on the windshield. You will have less and less rain from Mendocino County south, but won't hit really nice (read warmer) weather until you reach Southern California (ca Santa Barbara).
Theres's quite a lot to see around here, but it looks like there's only going to be a 1 day break in the rain and you probably want to use that to put miles toward some warmth!
Your best route south depends on how much you want to see and how anxious you are to get to warmer weather. Your next practical choice of route doesn't come for another 170 miles when you reach the junction with highway 20 at Calpella Ca.
For now, stay on 101. A bit south of Rio Dell (about 50 miles south from Trinidad) you will see signs marked 'Avenue of the Giants'. This will take you on 'old' highway 101 which parallels the modern freeway, but winds through the redwood groves of Southern Humboldt County. Highly recommended. Easily navigable and a gorgeous drive. Don't miss it.
Ok, the main route.
If you are really anxious for warmer weather, take highway 20 east at Calpella... get on I-5 south and stay there until you reach the latitude of Santa Barbara. (1 day) Then head back over to the coast and enjoy yourselves. You may want to splash the boat and cruise the Channel Islands!
The more scenic alternative is to stay on highway 101 until you get past SF. (unless you want to see Fort Bragg)
When you hit the SF Bay area either take a route around the East Bay or go through via the Presidio. There are lots of marinas in the East Bay if you want to kick around for awhile and see the city. If you want to pass straight through, I'd take the Presidio route through the city, it bears to the right shortly after the south end of the Golden Gate. You probably don't want to stay on 101 through downtown.
At SF (from the Presidio route) you can pick up Highway 1 down the coast for a beautiful scenic drive. Barring a major storm system you will be feeling pretty good! Otherwise, you can pick up highway 1 after rejoining highway 101 south of SF.

Take lots of pictures.
