Haul out facilities are limited and expensive around here. As a result, there are many boats in the water with ten year old bottom paint, and there is not much info available on what works best, mostly just opinion with little experience to back it up. What is the consensus on the longest lasting bottom paint for fresh water and VERY infrequent haulouts, racing not a factor. This is not for me, 1979 FK, SR, but for a friend who is buying a 33 footer which is obviously even more expensive and difficult to haul.
I used Interlux ablatives for several years with satisfactory results..UNTIL..a problem occured with their ablatives, at which point I switched to West Marines CCP. It's a bear to mix but mix you must. I sanded back to barrier coat and put on four coats...when I hauled two weeks ago I was sure I had a repaint ordeal ( we can't paint our own bottoms in N.Y.)coming up but it was still covering... a little thin at the waterline but still good after five years. And usually reasonably priced compared to Interlux's best ablative.
For years I have used along with my freinds who sail mostly in the Great Lakes VC 17 which has a great copper base to it. VC 17 applys well over old bottom paint and requires little prep work to apply and drys fast and can be put back in the water after 30 minutes of drying time and will last for 2-3 seasons. Not to mention it is great for racing too. It will take approx 6 quarts for a 33 ft boat at about 35-40$ a quart, but it is deffently worth it.
