As many of you know from previous posts, I have been investigating the cost of a cruising spinnaker furler. Two companies make them that I know of, Bamar and Facnor. I just recieved a reply from Bamar's US distributor. The cost.....$1858, excluding some critical hardware that will add an additional $250+ to the price. I shudder to query Facnor. This combined with a sprit for $650 puts the whole package pretty much out of reach - $2800+. Frankly I can't imagine what makes this technology more expensive than my headsail furler. I expressed this to the Bamar people but have not yet recieved a reply. It's doubtful I ever will. I am now considering building my own from a used headsail furler. This is excellent technology for the single hander. Any ideas??? Suggestions??
A Chutescoop (also called a spinnaker sock or spinnaker snuffer) would probably cost in the neighborhood of $250., and would enable you to fly a cruising chute singlehanded. It's like a long, sausage-shaped device that is attached to the halyard and raised to the top of the mast. When you want to take down the spinnaker, you pull on a dousing line, and the tube comes down over the spinnaker, collapsing it. Then you take down the tube, with the spinnaker inside, and stow it below. They're made by many companies. The device was invented in 1979 by V.F. Shaw. Coincidentally, I had the pleasure of crewing for Mr. Shaw in a Wednesday evening beer can race last summer. The following company website has photos showing how it works. http://www.chutescoop.com/
CDI is making a spinnaker furler now. I saw it at the Annapolis boat show. I was impressed, but since I'm not even close to having a cruising spinnaker yet, I didn't get the price. Here's their website: http://www.sailcdi.com/Spinnakerfurler.htm
I have a chute scoop/sock. It works fine but you still have to go forward to set up the tack line, and sheets, and raise the sock. Ever done this from from a heaving C25 deck? Single handed? It's frigg'n scarry. This furler allows you to launch and retrieve from the cockpit, just like a headsail furler. I seldom use my spinnaker anymore unless I'm sailing on fairly flat water. To borrow a phrase, "this could change everything".
The web link Dave put up has a price of $1850.00 for the furler. It also has the manual and detail of all the parts. I think I could make this for under $200.00 working with my local machine shop. Cheers.
Harken has a number of headsail furlers (code zero, gennaker, screecher, etc). None are called "cruising spinnaker" but they are definitely cheaper. http://www.harkenstore.com/uniface.urd/SCCYSPW1
