Hi All, here is a link to the Highlander Sea. It is a schooner I have begun volunteering on. Over the winter it is all about maintanance, but next summer it will be all about sailing. Cheers.
Gorgeous! A little like the boats I'm surrounded by here in Mystic--for example, the schooner Brilliant that I see every day and that does kids' programs and charters out of the seaport.
You lucky guys get to see and be near those great boats. Thanks for the sharing. My dream to to be able to have a chance to help on one of those boats for kids.
The majority of the sailing is in support of the Port Huron school district. I am looking forward to fostering the next generation of sailors. Of couse I am not getting rid of my C25. The manager of the boat said I can sail up to Port Huron in the summer and moore next to the Highlander Sea when I am working the boat. Should be fun. Cheers.
Hi Dennis. Boy! The Highlander Sea brings back alot of memories for me. I worked as a Deckhand for a month on the Picton Castle a few years back during the Tall Ship Sail Op 2000 The Highlander Sea sailed in the same fleet with us on the way to Chicago. She Flew Canadian flag back then and her home port was Lunenburg, Nova Scotia the same as the Picton Castle. So many of her crew and skipper, at that time were good friends with the Crew from the Picton and we would all go drinking together when we were in port. Here's a photo of me at the helm of the Picton Castle going into Chicago with the Highlander Sea behind me. Heres another of us docked near each other at Navy Pier in Chicago. Like I said it brings back alot of memories, although Some of the memories from the ports we visited are a little fuzzy if you know what I meanIt was a hell of alot of work but it was a hell of alot of fun!!!
That sounds like a lot of fun Larry. I am looking forward to helping out. It will not be long sails, just day stuff out of Port Huron. And of course, maintanance until them. Did you pay to sail on the Picton Castle or do they pay you, or was it volunteer? Cheers. p.s. thanks for the beer at the meeting. I hope you all can get the visitor stuff worked out. I'd hate to see anyone turned back from having fun. Maybe we could do a visitors fee.....$10.00 per cruise? Maybe they would just join us if they saw that.
It was a lot of fun and I learned alot more about sailing and and about myself too. The Picton has what they call a paid trainee program; which means you pay them to work you like you were an impressed seaman on an old ship of the line in Admiral Nelson's navy. Check out this web site for a run down on the typical tranee schedule. (http://www.picton-castle.com/ship_and_crew/life_on_board.php)
I also Did some volunteer work on the MADELINE (see Photo) one winter and started to take the training to become a perminent crew member but the 3 to 4hr drive, back and forth to Traverse City twice a week in the winter got to be a bit too much for me.
Then I helped a couple of young guys, that I met on the Picton, to build this boat which they later sailed across the Atlantic.
Maybe I'll find some time to get involved with the big boats again soon. As far as the club guest issues are concerned I think it will all turn out OK in the end.

We got to tour her when the tall ships were in Toledo, Ohio a couple of years ago.
