So - it's my first winter, and Whisper is up on the hard and shrink wrapped. I'm concerned that I didn't properly/completely dry the bilge.

Whenever I checked through the hatches in the cabin sole, all there ever was, was a small amount of water, less than an inch, presumably from rain.

I did work the manual pump and got out all the water that would come out when we blocked her up. Should I go back in and try to dry it further? Is adding some salt to lower the freezing point a viable alternative, what about some antifreeze?

Happy New Year to all - Many thanks for your thoughts!

Jerry

I wouldn't add salt. Salt will probably not be good for your keel bolts and nuts. I add some RV antifreeze to the bilge, the same kind that you add to the fresh, potable water lines.

It's best to get all the water out of the bilge before it freezes into a solid block and expands inside the fiberglass keel stub. After pumping it, you can get the rest out in 10 minutes with a big sponge and bucket. You can put antifreeze in the bilge to prevent the water from freezing, but, why not take a few minutes more and sponge it dry? Even if it doesn't freeze, it'll keep the interior wetter during the winter, encouraging growth of mold and mildew.

Besides what the others have said, I sit a container of Damp Rid in each sink. When I visit the boat I empty what water is collected in each one.

You've gotten good advice but, hey, if it was going to freeze and damage anything it will have happened already. Seems to me there is plenty of expansion room (up) in that area for the ice to expand. I'm not sure I'd break into the shrink wrap for this.

Randy,
I agree, I've been thinking similarly - that there is room for the ice to expand upward, so I don't need to be too concerned. On the other hand, here in the East Coast, we haven’t gone below 32 degree yet!!! So I’m still considering getting back into the bilge...
As always, the forum delivers great detailed information – thank you everyone!
Best to all in the New Year.

It's been pretty mild east of the Mississippi this winter so, it might not have frozen yet. But, I imagine you're right about the upward expansion. I'd be more concerned about mold, etc.
