I guess that would be an example of how not to make a beach landing...especially with a motor.
Just about every year, we go to the Outerbanks, NC and rent a beach house with friends from New York. Many years ago, we were in one of the local beach/toy stores and bought a cheapy inflatable for the kids to play in the surf. It was not made for those conditions as was stated on the box. After sa few rides in by the kids...the bottom separated and then it was basically an oversized tube. At the end of the week, my wife brought it back to the store and got another one. (I was not going to go back to the store since I knew we used it for the wrong purpose but it was a beach store. I stayed outside the store...a little embarassed to bring it back...but that is when my wife gets involved. So...am I a wimp or ...an ethical person ?) The store person replaced it and did not recall any other defective ones.
The next year...that one bit the dust as well ! We did not bring it back to the store.
Then I used a Sevylor inflatable canoe that we had (Tahiti Classic - 12'). This canoe was to be used for lakes, etc but never had good steerage..so it was not being used..became more or less a toy. That Sevylor has withstood at least 2 - 3 years of beach use with no ill effects. The kids do not always use it, so we stopped bringing it.
Then..I read on a website that someone discovered that the Sevylor made a skeg that can be attached even to the old canoes they sold. I bought it for about $15. It was not in the local sporting goods stores. Did not even know it existed until I read the results one person had with it. Anyway...we now have a very usable canoe ! It has steerage and we sometimes bring it back to the beach but use it on the bay side. This inflatable is probably 10 years old or more. One day, i plan to take it on the catalina and use it after anchoring.
But...it does not have a motor on it - So no surf problems as long as you do not break your neck !
I'm trying to imagine how that first pic happened, and am not having much success... Maybe the guy jumped forward just before hitting the beach, just as the wave broke under the stern?? Weird!
