ISN'T IT POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THESE CRETINS AND BLOCK ALL POSTS FROM THEM? THEY MUST BE A DUES PAYING MEMBER TO POST SO WHO ARE THEY?

No val, our forum is not a restricted forum, no one has to pay dues to post here. Our Association sponsors this forum for the greater good of the sailing community. I do not know what your title refers to, I am ignorant as to its meaning. If you are concerned about our getting inappropriate posts then please rest assured that we work very hard to moderate this forum and welcome others who wish to accept the responsibilities that come with moderator powers.

Actually, you can post without being a member. But, I agree, we might want to explore some kind of blocking tool.

Is it not possible to block not just the email address but also the IP address? I see when I click on a name one of my options is to view the IP address. I realize that there are literally millions of IPs. But what the heck.

We can block IP addresses but this is an outdated concept. In general, every time you log in you receive a new IP address from your provider - If you leave your net connection up and running, eventually you will still get a new IP address through reassignment. Between costs of owning a million addresses and more importantly the security associated with dynamic Addresses it is pretty darn rare that you find anyone with the same IP these days.

Because of this, it is not uncommon to find a new IP address and only one post per crack distributor or porn vendor. Very, very few people are operating on their own connection with a static address not assigned by a net service provider. Because of this the only way to block IP addresses is to ban an entire range eliminating in most cases an entire provider or providers range of assignable IP addresses.

For example say Bill Meinert was posting porn and selling his Viagra on the site. His last IP address is 12.218.219.102 . We could block everything in the 12.200.xxxxx range through 12.99.99.99 however this would also block PC Jim Baumgart, his wife spike, Max, George Seaborn, Dave Bristle and PC Ed Jakubus amongst about 30 others.

We are looking into the new upgrade and hope to install it soon. Unfortunately upgrading on this scale isn’t like popping the new version of adobe acrobat onto your PC. There have been mods made along the way that may or may not upgrade, new unknown bugs that need to be tested or worked through and an entire database of old posts that needs to have proper connectivity to the new application.

This new version should address the ability of a bot (robot, automated script, non human program etc) to post these things. Until that time the officers and a few others have taken on the responsibility of deleting these posts whenever they pop up.

I might also add that the small volume we are getting isn't anything compared to larger sites. Not much of a consolation, but It could be worse. Kevin and I are both working at our fastest pace (remember we have jobs, families and boats too.) to get this done. We just ask that you please be patient, point them out when you see them and we will hit them one at a time.
